Term 1
The 15m-diameter labyrinth garden was dismantled and reshaped into a formal double ringed garden. It was an opportunity for the Permaculture students to develop a design, mark it out and then commence the huge task of hauling tonnes of soil whilst creating a 3 cubic metre compost heap of weeds and herbs in the process. It has taken just over a term to complete the garden and prepare it for citrus tree replanting. 7 Geo 4 has been learning about the water cycle in the field, observing and interacting with the unique swale systems. With Mr O, the students will be assessed by explaining specific water cycle processes and elements in the field!
They have also been managing the diversion drains and the swale around the Permaculture shed. The famous man of ‘mud fun’, Mr David Mitsak, has been volunteering on Fridays with the engagement team to repair the cob oven using locally sourced clay. He has also led the painting of the oven using a variety of clay pigments, enhancing the beauty of the structure. David plans to build a
hothouse with the students, incorporating a mud-brick earth wall into the structure so we can grow tropical plants like vanilla bean!
There is a strong rumour that the chickens are returning. The support unit has been working hard at fox proofing the structure. It will be great to convert the returning weed scape of morning glory and madeira vine into local organic eggs.
