Lake Heights Public School
Our Story
The construction of the Lake Heights Public School’s permaculture garden began in early Term 3, 2011 and was completed and ready for opening by the end of that term.
The site was previously occupied by the school’s administration block and in conjunction with the Warrawong Community Of Schools Permaculture Partnership via a seeding grant, the design and construction of the garden could begin. Due to the small size of the garden (120 square metres), it was decided to design a low maintenance garden that would incorporate art works created by students along with vegetables and fruit trees to provide an outdoor living classroom where students, staff and the community could utilise for a variety of purposes. The garden includes not only seasonal vegetables, but also bush tucker plants and tropical fruit trees such as bananas and dragon fruit. |
A mural jointly designed and produced by Aboriginal students and parents includes local Aboriginal designs and handprints of the Aboriginal students from our school. Each Lake Heights student also made and decorated a clay tile, which were fired and laid into the garden. The Lake Heights Public School permaculture garden is an asset to the students, staff and local community. |
