Cringila Public School
Our Story
The permaculture garden was established in 2003 with funds supplied by the ‘Growing Great Gardens Program,’ sponsored by Blue Scope Steel. It was designed and built by Dan Deighton and Aaron Sorensen with the help of the Cringila Public School staff and parents. The garden occupies an area of approx. 800 square metres yet it opens up a world of endless learning opportunities for the Cringila community. The Garden Ambassador program trains students in all facets of permaculture gardening including growing sustainable and organic food, using biodynamics to improve soil quality, composting, recycling, seed saving, increasing biodiversity and planting native trees, shrubs and grasses. |
Cringila Public School is located in the suburb of Cringila a low socio-economic area 5 km from the centre of the city of Wollongong (Pop. 250 000+). Cringila itself is situated next to the Port Kembla Steel Works and has historically been a school for the children of migrant workers and new arrivals to Australia over the past 50 years, with a strong multicultural heritage.
