Term 1
Term 1 was an industrious time for the Year 4 Garden Ambassadors, who have been soil building by ‘no dig’ gardening in the 4 season vegetable garden, ‘chop & dropping’ in the food forest and managing the school food waste in the aerobic compost pile. The worms have been writhing underfoot preparing the soil for the autumn vegetable planting.
Mr Irish of Year 4 has been taking a crash course in ‘hands on’ organic gardening practices and keeping up with the frenetic pace of the Garden Ambassadors. We have been fortunate to have Laura, a Permaculturalist from England, volunteering with the team this term. She will also be establishing a medicinal herb garden outside the kitchen with some of the Ambassadors. Look out for the mega flora sprouting out of the Cringila Permaculture Garden in the upcoming months! |
The wet summer and autumn have been wonderful to Cringila’s verdant Living Classroom. Just wander through the food forest and you are immediately taken to another space, one of imagination and wonder. The fruit and nut trees of 10 years have been loaded with fruit, some ripe and others to ripen over the coming months. It has been common for the children to collect 100 – 250 macadamia nuts each fortnight visit. |
